Elon Musk Says AI and Robotics Could Make Retirement Savings Unnecessary in the Future
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has suggested that traditional retirement savings may become unnecessary in the coming decades, as rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics could lead to an era of widespread economic abundance.
Speaking on the Moonshots with Peter Diamandis podcast, Musk shared his view that within the next 10 to 20 years, AI-driven productivity and automation could ensure that people’s basic needs—such as healthcare, housing, and income—are fully met.
“One side recommendation I have is, don’t worry about squirreling money away for retirement,” Musk said. “In 10 or 20 years, you won’t need to save for retirement. If any of the things that we’ve said are true, saving for retirement will be irrelevant.”
AI, Robotics, and an Abundant Future
Musk expressed optimism that AI and robotics will dramatically increase productivity, leading to lower costs and greater access to goods and services. According to him, automation could enable a sustainable and abundant society where financial insecurity becomes less common.
Addressing concerns around job losses, healthcare affordability, and rising living costs, Musk predicted a future of what he described as “universal high income.” While acknowledging that such a transformation could also lead to social challenges, he maintained that the overall outcome would be positive.
“I think we’re going to end up beyond abundance—beyond what people could possibly think of as abundance,” Musk said, adding that AI and robots could eventually meet nearly all human needs.
AI Replacing Jobs, but Boosting Living Standards
Musk has previously stated that AI could surpass combined human intelligence within the next two decades and potentially take over more than half of today’s jobs. However, he framed this shift as an opportunity rather than a threat, arguing that robots performing most work would increase efficiency and reduce prices.
The resulting productivity gains, he said, could make many goods and services extremely affordable, improving overall living standards rather than lowering them.
“Working Will Be Optional,” Says Musk
In earlier social media posts, Musk said that AI and robotics may eventually replace nearly all jobs, making work optional rather than necessary. He compared future work to a hobby—something people choose to do for fulfillment, not survival.
In a separate interview with U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, Musk also suggested that goods and services could become “close to free” in the long term due to large-scale automation.
“It’s not that people will have a lower standard of living,” Musk said. “They’ll actually have a much higher standard of living. The real challenge will be fulfillment—how people find meaning and purpose in life.”
A Vision Still Open to Debate
While Musk’s views highlight the potential of AI and robotics to reshape economies and lifestyles, experts note that such outcomes depend on technological progress, policy decisions, and how societies manage the transition.
For now, Musk’s comments offer a glimpse into a possible future—one where automation plays a central role in redefining work, income, and retirement planning.
