Suryakumar Yadav Joins Rohit Sharma & MS Dhoni as India’s T20 World Cup-Winning Captain, Celebrates with Emotional Moment

India created history in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup as captain Suryakumar Yadav led the team to a stunning victory over New Zealand, winning the final by nearly 100 runs. With this triumph, Suryakumar joined an elite list of Indian cricket legends who have captained the country to World Cup glory.

The prestigious list now includes Kapil Dev (1983), MS Dhoni (2007 and 2011), Rohit Sharma (2024), and Suryakumar Yadav (2026). Among the 269 captains who have led India in international cricket, Suryakumar has become only the fourth captain to win a World Cup title.

This victory also marked India’s third T20 World Cup title and their third consecutive ICC trophy, highlighting the team’s dominance in world cricket.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Emotional Moment

After the historic win, Suryakumar Yadav had an emotional reaction during the post-match presentation. As he walked toward the stage, he lightly slapped himself a few times, seemingly trying to process the magnitude of the achievement.

For Suryakumar, the moment was deeply personal. The 2026 tournament was his fourth T20 World Cup appearance. He had experienced heartbreak in the 2021 and 2022 editions, but finally celebrated success in the last two tournaments.

“I think it will take some time to fully realise what has happened, but I’m extremely happy,” Suryakumar said during the presentation ceremony.

A Remarkable Journey Since 2021

Suryakumar Yadav made his international debut in 2021, and within less than five years he has achieved one of cricket’s greatest milestones — becoming a World Cup-winning captain.

He credited the support he received from the Indian cricket management after the 2024 T20 World Cup, when he was appointed captain.

“It has been a long journey. After the 2024 World Cup, Jay Shah, Rohit bhai and the team management showed faith in me and gave me the opportunity to lead. From there to coming here and winning the World Cup feels special,” he said.

Backing Young Players Paid Off

Suryakumar also praised the performance of several key players who delivered in the final.

Young talents like Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson stepped up in crucial moments despite facing criticism earlier in the tournament. Suryakumar emphasized the importance of trusting players during difficult phases.

“It’s important to understand what players are capable of. We always believed they had match-winning ability,” he said.

The captain also reserved special praise for India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, calling him a “once-in-a-generation bowler” and even describing him as a “national treasure.”

India’s Era of Dominance

India’s latest World Cup triumph did not come as a surprise to many cricket fans. Since Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepped away from T20 internationals after the 2024 World Cup, the team has maintained remarkable consistency.

India have not lost a single series since 2024, dominating opponents both at home and abroad. Their commanding 96-run victory against New Zealand in the final showcased the strength and confidence of this new generation of Indian cricketers.

With Suryakumar Yadav at the helm, Indian cricket appears to be entering another golden era of success on the global stage.
