India–Germany Relations Enter New Era: PM Modi Highlights Strong Partnership After Meeting Chancellor Merz

India, Germany Turn Shared History Into Modern Partnership: PM Modi After Talks With Chancellor Merz

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that India and Germany are transforming their deep historical links into a modern, future-ready partnership, driven by trade, technology, clean energy, and strong people-to-people ties.

Speaking at a joint press conference with visiting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, PM Modi highlighted the shared intellectual and political legacy between the two nations and said this foundation is now shaping a growing strategic convergence.

Shared History, Strong Foundations

PM Modi recalled the influence of Indian thinkers and freedom fighters on Germany’s intellectual and political landscape. He referred to Rabindranath Tagore’s literary contributions, Swami Vivekananda’s philosophical impact across Europe, and Madam Bhikaji Cama unfurling India’s freedom flag on German soil, calling these milestones symbols of a long-standing bond.

“Today, we are transforming this historical connection into a modern partnership,” PM Modi said.

Trade Crosses $50 Billion Mark

Highlighting economic ties, PM Modi said India–Germany bilateral trade has crossed $50 billion for the first time, marking its highest-ever level. He also noted that over 2,000 German companies operate in India, reflecting sustained confidence in India’s economy and long-term growth potential.

Focus on Clean Energy and Technology

Both leaders underlined strong cooperation in renewable energy, climate action, and innovation. PM Modi announced the establishment of an India–Germany Centre of Excellence, which will act as a shared platform for technology, knowledge exchange, and innovation in clean energy and sustainability.

Merz’s First India and Asia Visit

PM Modi described Chancellor Merz’s visit as highly significant, noting that it is his first official visit to India and Asia since assuming office. The visit coincides with 25 years of the India–Germany Strategic Partnership and 75 years of diplomatic relations.

Earlier in the day, the two leaders held delegation-level talks in Ahmedabad.

Sabarmati Ashram and Cultural Diplomacy

PM Modi welcomed Chancellor Merz to Sabarmati Ashram, where both leaders paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. Merz also signed the visitors’ book.

Later, the two leaders jointly inaugurated the International Kite Festival 2026 at the Sabarmati Riverfront, highlighting the cultural dimension of the visit. They were seen flying a kite featuring Lord Hanuman, symbolising goodwill and friendship.

Migration, Skills and Global Cooperation

PM Modi emphasised cooperation in migration, mobility, and skill development, noting the contribution of Indian professionals to the German economy. He welcomed the Joint Declaration of Intent on the Global Skills Partnership, which will facilitate the movement of skilled workers, particularly in healthcare.

On global issues, PM Modi reiterated India’s support for peaceful conflict resolution and said both nations are united in their stance that terrorism is the greatest threat to humanity.

What Chancellor Friedrich Merz Said

Chancellor Merz said Germany aims to elevate ties with India to a higher level, highlighting cooperation in green hydrogen, urban development, mobility, defence, and secure supply chains. He said the new green hydrogen project involving companies from both countries could be a game-changer for future energy needs.

Merz also stressed the importance of concluding the India–EU Free Trade Agreement to unlock the full potential of bilateral economic relations.

Thanking PM Modi for inviting him to Gujarat, Merz described the gesture as a symbol of deep trust and friendship between the two countries.
