India Leading Global AI Adoption, Says OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at India AI Impact Summit 2026
New Delhi: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said that India is currently leading the world in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and is poised to become one of the largest global markets for the technology.
Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Altman acknowledged growing concerns about AI-driven job disruption but expressed confidence in humanity’s ability to adapt and create new opportunities.
AI Will Impact Jobs, But New Opportunities Will Emerge
Addressing concerns over automation and job losses, Altman admitted that artificial intelligence will significantly influence the job market.
“It will definitely impact the job market, but we always find new things to do, and I have no doubt we will find lots of better ones this time,” Altman said while speaking to ANI.
He emphasized that throughout history, technological revolutions — from the Industrial Revolution to the internet era — have consistently led to the creation of new and more meaningful forms of employment.
With AI increasingly being used across industries such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, education, and content creation, fears have grown about automation replacing routine and repetitive roles. However, Altman believes AI will ultimately enhance productivity and open doors to innovative career paths.
India Emerging as a Global AI Leader
Altman praised India’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem, saying the country is not just participating in the AI revolution but actively shaping it.
“It is amazing to be here. The work happening in India and the adoption of AI is leading the world, and I can’t wait to see what comes next,” he said.
He added that India is likely to wield significant influence over how AI technologies evolve globally in the coming years.
OpenAI, headquartered in San Francisco, has seen India become its second-largest user base. The company expanded its footprint in the country by opening its first office in New Delhi last year.
