India–US Sign Historic AI Pact ‘Pax Silica’: What This Strategic Tech Partnership Means for the Future

In a major step toward strengthening global cooperation in artificial intelligence and economic security, India has formally joined Pax Silica, the United States’ flagship initiative focused on AI development and secure supply chains.

The announcement was made on the sidelines of the Global AI Impact Summit currently being held in New Delhi, where India and the United States signed the Pax Silica Declaration — a move described as a “historic milestone” in deepening strategic technology partnerships.

What is Pax Silica?

Pax Silica is an initiative led by the US Department of State aimed at advancing cooperation on artificial intelligence and supply chain security among trusted allies and partners. The declaration emphasizes the importance of building reliable and resilient supply chains that are essential for long-term economic stability and mutual prosperity.

The agreement also recognizes artificial intelligence as a transformative force capable of shaping the global economy, strengthening innovation, and enhancing national security.

According to the US Department of State, the declaration reaffirms a shared commitment to technological progress, economic resilience, and trusted AI systems.

“We affirm our shared commitment to advance mutual prosperity, technological progress, and economic security for our peoples,” the US State Department said in its official statement.

Non-signatory participants include Canada, the Netherlands, the European Union, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and Taiwan.

India’s inclusion marks a significant expansion of the initiative in the Indo-Pacific region and strengthens its growing partnership with the United States in emerging technologies.

Focus on Secure AI and Supply Chains

The Pax Silica Declaration underscores two key priorities:

  • Building reliable and secure supply chains critical to economic security.
  • Promoting trustworthy AI systems to ensure long-term prosperity and mutual security.

The US government highlighted that secure AI development and dependable technology ecosystems are essential to safeguarding global economic stability.

India Announces New Delhi Frontier AI Commitments

Alongside joining Pax Silica, the Government of India also unveiled the New Delhi Frontier AI Commitments, described as a key outcome of the India AI Impact Summit 2026.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called it a significant milestone, stating that leading global and Indian AI companies have adopted a voluntary framework aimed at inclusive and responsible AI development.

“Today, leading frontier AI companies along with our own AI companies have come together to make a set of voluntary commitments — a shared commitment for inclusive and shared AI,” Vaishnaw said.

Why This Matters

India’s participation in Pax Silica signals:

  • Stronger India–US technology cooperation
  • Greater focus on AI governance and security
  • Enhanced global supply chain resilience
  • Expanded collaboration among trusted democratic partners

As artificial intelligence reshapes industries worldwide, initiatives like Pax Silica aim to ensure that AI development remains secure, trustworthy, and economically beneficial for participating nations.
