Elon Musk bets big on content creators, hinting that X will pay more than YouTube.

Elon Musk’s recent endorsement of increased payouts for content creators occurs at a pivotal moment, as digital platforms vie to retain original, human-generated, and authoritative material in the face of a surge in AI-produced content. Previously acknowledging that X had been “underpaying” its creators, Musk—who also leads Tesla and SpaceX—suggested on Wednesday that the platform is considering enhanced compensation to remain competitive with YouTube.

In response to a tweet advocating for higher creator payments, Musk directly addressed X’s head of product Nikita Bier with the statement: “Ok, let’s do it, but rigorously enforcing no gaming of the system.” Bier promptly replied that he was “On it,” further elaborating that a new method is being developed which should eliminate 99% of fraudulent activity—a direct answer to concerns about potential abuse.

Musk’s remarks were met with enthusiasm from independent journalist Nick Shirley—recently recognized for uncovering daycare center fraud in Minnesota—who expressed optimism about X's potential as an uncensored video-sharing platform. Shirley noted that while he has encouraged peers to post on X, many have prioritized other platforms due to more lucrative monetization opportunities.

Numerous users joined the discussion online, describing these proposed changes as transformative. Many argued that only platforms offering fair compensation would succeed in maintaining high-quality content amid widespread AI-driven aggregation by large language models.

Musk's renewed focus on creator remuneration follows his earlier admission in October regarding underpayment issues at X. At that time, he corrected Nikita Bier's assertion—which suggested creator payouts were counterproductive—by stating: "No, the issue is that we are underpaying and not allocating payment accurately enough." He went so far as to acknowledge YouTube's superior approach to supporting creators financially.

The monetization program introduced after Musk’s $44 billion acquisition allows verified users on X to earn ad revenue based on engagement metrics. Despite this initiative, criticisms have persisted regarding inconsistent earnings reports, delayed payments, and opaque criteria for monetization eligibility.

With his latest comments and directives aimed at both increasing payouts and preventing exploitation through artificial engagement or bot activity, Musk appears committed to addressing longstanding concerns within the creator community while reinforcing X’s position among leading digital platforms.
