Apple will release the iOS 27 upgrade in 2026. Check out the five potential new features in the upcoming release.
With the release of iOS 26 this year, Apple redesigned the operating system's naming system and introduced a new design. However, the Cupertino-based tech behemoth has continued to face criticism from customers, owing to both the long-delayed AI features and some poorly implemented features in iOS 26. Apple, on the other hand, would like to turn a new leaf and reclaim the faith of its devoted fans with iOS 27.
iOS 27 is still a long way off, with the official reveal scheduled in the summer of 2026 during the WWDC event, while the UI is slated to make its debut with the iPhone 18 series in September, as has been the case for a few years on Apple devices. However, leaks regarding the new UI have already begun to circulate, giving us a clue of what to expect.
Here's a list of major features likely to be included in iOS 27:
1) Changes to the Photos App:
A recent leaked iOS code obtained by Macworld stated that Apple is working on some upgrades to the Photos app, which could be released with the iOS 27 update. According to the report, there are "new feature flags tied to improved collections in the Photos app with iOS 27."
To summarize, with the iOS 18 release, Apple entirely overhauled the photographs app, removing the bottom menu in favor of a single view based on "collections," which organize photographs by subjects such as recent days, trips, people, and more.
The better collections are presumably the next phase of this feature, which Apple may be considering for the iOS 27 upgrade.
2) New AirPods pairing system:
According to the same claim, iOS 27 may include a new AirPods pairing feature. It did not go into detail about how this new method would work, but it hinted at potential under-the-hood improvements to make pairing faster and more dependable.
3) AI search engine:
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a web search tool driven by AI for iOS 27. The service, internally nicknamed "World Knowledge Answers," is expected to be available in locations where consumers look for information on the internet, including the updated Siri, Safari, and Spotlight.
According to reports, the new function will rely on a large language model (LLM), which could be developed in part with Google's aid.
4) Apple's AI doctor:
Gurman has previously discussed "Project Mulberry," a program that will overhaul the Apple Health app and introduce a new service called Health+.
The service is believed to incorporate a health coach via an AI bot to imitate part of the analysis performed by a real doctor.
According to reports, Apple's future Health app will be able to collect data from all of its users' Apple devices, including the iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, and even third-party products.
5) Snow Leopard-style update:
According to Gurman, the iOS 27 update may be similar to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which prioritized quality control and minor enhancements.
However, the good news is that Apple may focus on strengthening existing AI features while being more cautious about introducing new AI tools.
