In addition to applauding US President Donald Trump's peace initiative, which he called "unwavering," and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's "strong resolve," Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday applauded the release of Israeli detainees from Gaza.

According to PM Modi, the nation backs Trump's earnest attempts to promote regional peace.

"After more than two years in captivity, we applaud the liberation of all hostages. Their freedom is a testament to Prime Minister Netanyahu's tenacity, President Trump's steadfast peace efforts, and the bravery of their families. PM Modi stated on X, "We back President Trump's earnest attempts to bring peace to the region."

Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist group, freed the remaining 20 Israeli detainees on Monday, possibly ending the conflict in Gaza that broke out after the group besieged southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

The majority of the 1,219 individuals killed in the October 7, 2023, Hamas strike in Israel were civilians. 251 hostages were taken to Gaza by Hamas militants.

On October 9, Donald Trump declared that Israel and Hamas had agreed on the "first phase" of a plan to halt the violence in Gaza and free the captives and hostages.

The statement came after days of negotiations in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm al-Sheikh between Israel, Hamas, and other parties.

In a speech to Israel's Parliament on Monday, Donald Trump celebrated what he called the end of a "painful nightmare" following the return of the last remaining hostages from Gaza and the subsequent release of a number of Palestinian inmates under the ceasefire agreement he helped negotiate.

The US president's trip to Israel preceded a conference on Gaza in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. PM Modi will not attend, but Kirti Vardhan Singh, the minister of state (MoS) for external affairs, will represent him.
