Stock Market Holiday on January 15: BSE, NSE to Remain Closed Due to Maharashtra Municipal Elections

Indian stock markets will remain closed for trading on January 15 as the Maharashtra government has declared a public holiday to facilitate the smooth conduct of municipal corporation elections across the state. Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) have officially confirmed the market closure through revised circulars.

According to BSE, trading will not take place on January 15 in the equity segment, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGR). In addition, all equity derivatives contracts scheduled to expire on January 15, 2026, will now expire on January 14, 2026. These changes will be reflected in the end-of-day contract master files.

Similarly, NSE has amended its earlier notification and announced January 15 as a trading holiday for both the capital market and futures & options (F&O) segments.

The Maharashtra government declared the holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, to ensure uninterrupted polling during elections in 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban, which fall under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The authority for such declarations has been delegated to the state government by the Ministry of Home Affairs since 1968.

Polling for the BMC—one of India’s most politically significant civic bodies—along with 28 other municipal corporations, is scheduled for January 15, while vote counting will take place on January 16. Since January 15 is a public holiday, most banks will remain closed, impacting clearing and settlement operations.

Earlier, stock exchanges had listed January 15 as a settlement holiday, but the notification has now been revised to a full trading holiday.

Upcoming Stock Market Holidays in 2026

With this update, Indian stock markets will observe 16 holidays in 2026. The next market holiday in January will be Republic Day on January 26. Other major holidays in the first half of the year include Holi (March 3), Ram Navami (March 26), Mahavir Jayanti (March 31), Good Friday (April 3), Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14), Maharashtra Day (May 1), and Bakri Id (May 28).
