US Stock Market Closed Today for Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Trading to Resume Tuesday
The US stock market remains closed today as Wall Street observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq Stock Market are shut on Monday, January 19, in line with the official stock market holiday calendar.
Bond markets are also closed for the holiday. Normal trading activity across US equity and bond markets will resume on Tuesday, January 20.
This marks the second US stock market holiday of the year, following New Year’s Day.
Geopolitical Tensions Unlikely to Impact Cash Markets Today
Any immediate impact from rising geopolitical tensions and trade-related developments is unlikely to be reflected in US cash markets, as Wall Street remains closed for the day.
Over the weekend, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 10% tariff on imports from eight European countries starting February 1. The proposed tariffs are linked to opposition from European nations over US statements regarding Greenland.
The President further stated that the tariff rate could rise to 25% by June unless a comprehensive agreement is reached.
US Stock Futures Trade Lower
Despite the market closure, US stock futures traded lower amid concerns over escalating trade tensions.
- S&P 500 futures declined nearly 1%
- E-mini Nasdaq 100 futures fell over 1.2%
European leaders have criticized the proposed measures. French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that the European Union may consider activating its anti-coercion instrument. According to media reports, the EU is also evaluating potential tariffs on up to €93 billion worth of US goods if the proposed levies move forward.
What Is Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Dr. King is remembered for his commitment to non-violent protest, his role in ending racial segregation, and his advocacy for equality and justice. His efforts contributed to landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
