Tarique Rahman: Who is he? The son of Khaleda Zia, the front-runner for prime minister of Bangladesh, returns after a 17-year banishment

Ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election, Tarique Rahman's return coincides with a period of intense uncertainty, great public expectations, and growing obstacles.

Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has triumphantly returned to the nation after being banished for almost twenty years. On Thursday, December 25, he arrived in Bangladesh and went straight to 300 Feet to speak at a gathering.

After 17 years of exile, Rahman's return was one of the most significant events in the nation's current national politics.

Prior to the Bangladeshi parliamentary election, Tarique Rahman's return home coincides with a period of intense uncertainty, strong public expectations, and growing difficulties.

Tarique Rahman's arrival is currently being planned. To give him a big public welcoming, the BNP made a lot of arrangements. According to the Dhaka Tribune, a large stage was built on a 300-foot stretch outside the capital.

Tarique Rahman: Who is he?
Khaleda Zia, the former prime minister of Bangladesh and leader of the BNP, is the father of prospective prime minister Tarique Rahman.

He is the leader of Bangladesh's most influential political party, the BNP, and the heir to the country's long-standing ruling family.

For what reason was Tarique Rahman banished?
Rahman spent 17 years living in self-imposed exile in London while facing numerous felony convictions.

Rahman fled Bangladesh for London in 2008 following what he has called political persecution, according to local media accounts.

Tarique was allegedly on trial for a number of graft accusations at the time.

He left a note at the airport with the following text: "I, Tarique Rahman, do hereby declare that as of today, 11 September 2008 I resign the post of senior joint secretary general of the BNP and thereby, retire from active politics."

Rahman Tarique is back. Why does it matter?
Rahman's decision to go back is influenced by both personal and political events. According to party insiders, he had to make an urgent journey home because his mother has been gravely ill for months.

Following the removal of Sheikh Hasina, the BNP's opponent, in the wake of the 2024 student-led protests, his return to the country after nearly 20 years of exile also signifies a dramatic change in national politics.

An interim government headed by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus has been in charge of the nation since Hasina's Awami League government fell on August 5, 2024.

In addition, Bangladesh's national election is scheduled for February of next year, during which the BNP will compete to regain control of the nation.

As its leader emerges as a top candidate for prime minister in the February elections, the BNP hopes to assemble five million supporters to greet him in a show of strength.

Reuters reports that a December survey conducted by the US-based International Republican Institute indicates that the BNP, along with the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party, is likely to secure the most parliamentary seats.

Despite being excluded from the poll, Hasina's Awami League party has promised disturbance, which some believe could compromise the outcome.

A crude bomb blast in Bangladesh claimed one life.
A person was murdered in a crude bomb explosion in the capital of Bangladesh on Wednesday, just before Tarique Rahman arrived, according to authorities, as reported by news agency PTI.

According to witnesses, the bomb was thrown from a flyover in front of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, the central headquarters of veterans of the 1971 Liberation War, in the Moghbazar neighborhood of Dhaka.

The Daily Star newspaper cited Inspector (Operations) of Hatirjheel Police Station Md Mohiuddin as saying that a crude bomb thrown by unidentified guys from the overpass struck a victim who immediately killed.

The incident has been the subject of an investigation.

Prior to this, Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated that law enforcement agencies have been directed to adopt top-tier security measures and maintain maximum vigilance.

In anticipation of Rahman's visit, authorities have established a "double-layer" security perimeter throughout Dhaka that combines party and state measures.
