Stock market holidays: On December 31 and January 1, a number of significant stock exchanges will either observe a holiday or have reduced trading sessions as the year comes to an end and international markets prepare to welcome the New Year.

The majority of institutional investors have already completed their positions due to the closure of major international markets on or before New Year's Day, which is why trading volumes are typically low in the last few days of the year.

Most financial markets in Asia and Europe are closed on Thursday, New Year's Day, and some are having shortened sessions or holidays on Wednesday and Friday. Investors in the Indian stock market will witness a full week of trading, but there won't be many triggers.

Wednesday, December 31, is a stock market holiday.
On December 31, Australian bourses, as well as those in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Spain, the UK, and a few other European countries, will have a shortened trading day.

Major Asian markets, including Japan and South Korea's KOSPI, will be closed for trading tomorrow.

On Wednesday, December 31, the US stock market will continue to be open for business.

Thursday, January 1, is a stock market holiday.
On New Year's Day, more international markets are closed. Taiwan and the markets in China, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea will be closed. These are the main marketplaces in the area, and they also influence trade in Indian exchanges.

The stock exchanges in Australia and New Zealand will close. Holidays will also be observed in the "mother market" of the United States. On New Year's Day, markets in the UK, Germany, and France will be closed.

On New Year's, will Indian markets be closed?
The most important thing for Indian investors to remember is that, as is always the case, neither December 31 nor January 1 are trade holidays. Both the BSE and NSE will be open for trade for the next two days, per the stock market holiday calendar that the bourses have released.

Nevertheless, trading activity would be muted on these dates, reflecting the global holiday mood, even though the Indian markets are open. Benchmark indices frequently fluctuate within small ranges, and institutional participation is generally modest.

Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2026, will be the first trading holiday.

According to Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist of Geojit Investments Limited, a significant shift in direction won't occur until early in the new year, when major institutions resume operations.

Investors would be better off keeping an eye on the market and waiting for fresh directional shifts and triggers. Nonetheless, one might take advantage of market weakness to nibble at high-quality large caps.
