According to a police statement, "some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen."Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the Gauteng province police spokesperson, told AFP, "We don't have a breakdown of who they are." According to authorities, the injured were sent to a hospital.
The incident happened next to a pub or unofficial bar in Bekkersdal, a poor neighborhood close to some of the main gold mines in South Africa.
What specifically happened?
According to a police statement, the assailants "opened fire at tavern patrons and continued to shoot randomly as they fled the scene," using two different vehicles.
Major General Fred Kekana, the provincial police commissioner, told SABC television that one of the deceased was a driver from an online car-hailing service who had been outside the club.
Police said they had started a manhunt for the perpetrators.
Police told AFP that they were unsure of the attack's motivation near Bekkersdal, 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the capital.
The second large-scale assault in a month
The second mass shooting in a month occurred in South Africa on Sunday, December 21.
Earlier on December 6, twelve people, including a three-year-old toddler, were killed when gunmen invaded a hostel close to the capital, Pretoria.
According to police, the shooting took place at a location where alcohol was being sold illegally.
