Delhi weather: Delhi Airport reports that 40 planes were canceled and four were rerouted.
The Delhi Airport reported on Monday, December 15, that low visibility caused up to 61 flights to be canceled, over 400 flights to be delayed, and five planes to be diverted.
The national capital and its surrounding areas were still covered in a thick layer of pollution on Monday, causing flight services at the Delhi airport to be interrupted. The air quality was classified as "severe."
Flight and train operations were hampered by this decreased visibility.
On Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a "orange" signal for heavy smog.

IndiGo's recommendation
The national airline of India, IndiGo, also sent out a notice alerting travelers of flight delays and cancellations.
Flight operations have been affected by the significant reduction in visibility caused by the heavy fog in Delhi this morning. In order to prioritize safety and reduce lengthy airport wait times, some flights may be proactively canceled throughout the day, according to IndiGo.
"We recognize how inconvenient this can be, especially when travel plans are important," the airline continued. Rest assured that our personnel at all airports are working nonstop to keep things running as smoothly as possible and to keep you updated if things change.
