Modi arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday to a grand red-carpet reception, with Ibrahim personally receiving him at the airport. Ahead of the talks, the Indian Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Perdana Putra, the Malaysian Prime Minister’s office.
“India and Malaysia share a special relationship. We are maritime neighbours, and for centuries our people have shared deep and affectionate ties,” Modi said. He also noted that Malaysia is home to one of the world’s largest populations of Indian origin, highlighting the civilisational, cultural, and democratic values linking the two nations.
The Prime Minister said both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, maritime security, and defence. “We will make defence cooperation more comprehensive,” he added.
Modi also announced plans to advance partnerships in emerging and strategic sectors, including artificial intelligence, digital technologies, semiconductors, health, and food security.
Touching upon regional developments, Modi said the Indo-Pacific region is emerging as a major global growth engine. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to development, peace, and stability across the Indo-Pacific in partnership with ASEAN.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said India and Malaysia continue to expand collaboration in trade, investment, connectivity, and defence, noting India’s significant rise on the global trade and economic front.
