Three US States Officially Recognise January 26 as India’s Republic Day
Washington, Alaska and Nebraska have formally recognised 26 January as the Republic Day of India, marking a significant gesture of goodwill and strengthening bilateral ties between the United States and India.
The recognition came through separate proclamations issued by the governors of the three states, highlighting the importance of India’s Republic Day and acknowledging the contributions of the Indian and Indian-American communities.
Alaska Recognises India’s 77th Republic Day
In its official proclamation, Alaska acknowledged that India—the world’s largest democracy—will celebrate its 77th Republic Day on January 26.
The proclamation emphasised the shared values of democracy, innovation, and economic growth between India and Alaska. It also noted that the Indian community has made meaningful contributions to the state’s cultural diversity, educational excellence, and economic vitality.
Alaska further highlighted growing cooperation with India in areas such as trade, technology, agriculture, and cultural exchange, fostering mutual prosperity and understanding. The proclamation also mentioned that the Consulate General of India in Seattle will host Republic Day celebrations to mark the occasion.
Governor Mike Dunleavy urged residents to participate in the celebrations and recognise the enduring ties between Alaska and India.
Washington and Nebraska Issue Similar Proclamations
Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson also signed a proclamation declaring January 26, 2026, as the Republic Day of India in Washington. He encouraged residents to acknowledge the achievements of the Indian and Indian-American communities and the long-standing friendship between Washington and India.
Similarly, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen proclaimed January 26, 2026, as India’s Republic Day in the state. His message called on citizens to recognise the contributions of the Indian community and the strong bonds shared between Nebraska and India.
US Governors Extend Republic Day Wishes to India
Beyond the three proclamations, several other US governors extended warm wishes to India on the occasion of Republic Day.
The Governor of Montana praised the Indian and Indian-American community for their contributions to cultural, educational, and economic life, while wishing India continued prosperity.
Meanwhile, the Governor of South Dakota congratulated India on completing 77 years as a republic and expressed confidence that India-US relations would continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.
Strengthening India-US People-to-People Ties
The recognition of India’s Republic Day by multiple US states underscores the deepening people-to-people ties and expanding cooperation between India and the United States, driven in part by the growing influence and contributions of the Indian diaspora.
