Trump’s 25% Tariff Threat Raises Concerns for India-Iran Trade
Former US President Donald Trump has warned of imposing a 25% tariff on countries doing business with Iran, a move that could impact global trade relations, including India’s long-standing economic ties with Tehran.
In a social media post on Monday, Trump said the tariff would be “effective immediately”, though he did not clarify the scope, timeline, or implementation details of the proposed duty.
“Any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America. This order is final and conclusive,” Trump wrote.
The announcement has sparked concerns among global markets, as several major economies — including India and China — maintain trade relations with Iran.
Potential Impact on Global Trade Routes
Trump’s tariff warning could disrupt key international trade routes and partnerships, particularly those involving energy, food commodities, and strategic infrastructure projects. India, which has maintained economic engagement with Iran despite international sanctions, could face indirect pressure if the proposal is implemented.
