On January 6 and 7, cold day conditions are also expected throughout Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh; on January 8 and 11, in Rajasthan.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued rain and snowfall warnings for specific areas and stated that cold wave conditions will persist in some parts of the country. The meteorological service predicts gloomy and foggy conditions for Delhi until tomorrow, indicating that the extreme cold wave that has swept through the nation's capital and surrounding areas would likely continue.
Additionally, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to experience cold days on January 6 and 7, Rajasthan from January 8 to 11, Madhya Pradesh on January 7 and 8, and Vidarbha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh from January 6 to 8, 2026.
Additionally, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are expected to see snowfall today, according to the IMD. As cold wave conditions continued to tighten their hold on the Kashmir Valley, a thin layer of fog covered Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, on Tuesday morning.
On January 8 and 9, light to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected throughout Tamil Nadu in southern India. On January 9 and 10, isolated areas of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Mahe are predicted to see heavy rains.
The weather service has predicted that during the following four days, minimum temperatures in northwest India will gradually drop by 2 to 3°C. Temperatures are predicted to be mostly constant for the next three days after that. Over the next two days, central and eastern India are projected to see a similar drop in temperature of two to three degrees Celsius, followed by steady conditions for the next five days. For the remainder of the nation, no significant shift in nighttime temperatures is anticipated.
In certain areas of Assam and Meghalaya, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Odisha, Rajasthan, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and west Uttar Pradesh, dense fog is highly expected.
Jharkhand, where temperatures fell below 10 degrees Celsius in ten districts on Tuesday, has also been placed under a coldwave alert, according to officials.
According to officials, a "yellow" alert has been issued for a number of districts, including Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Chatra.
They further stated that these districts should continue to experience cold wave conditions till January 7.
According to officials, Gumla recorded the state's lowest temperature of 2.2 degrees Celsius during the 24-hour period that ended at 8.30 am, followed by Khunti at 3.7 degrees and Lohardaga at 3.9 degrees.
"The western disturbance winds prevailing in the lower tropospheric levels have caused the drop in the mercury level," stated Abhishek Anand, Deputy Director of the Ranchi Meteorological Center, in explanation of the abrupt drop in temperatures.
