With appropriate credit and adaptable creator controls, Instagram's new "Add to Story" tool makes it simple for users to reshare public Stories

Instagram released a much-awaited upgrade that lets users reshare public Stories straight to their own profiles—even if they weren't tagged in the original post. This functionality was revealed on Threads by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta. When viewing qualifying content from public accounts, a button labeled "Add to Story" appears. Now available worldwide on iOS and Android, the rollout streamlines content amplification while guaranteeing correct attribution, doing away with cumbersome workarounds like screenshots.

With this growth, Instagram is obviously aiming to mimic how users now engage with Stories, but in a much more natural and refined manner. The new "Add to Story" button puts resharing front and center, adjacent to well-known options like sending a Story via direct message, rather than depending on subpar screen recordings or third-party applications. When you tap it, the original creator's handle is carried over into your repost, preserving exposure and providing due acknowledgment without requiring any work from you.

For artists and public personalities in particular, control is still a crucial aspect of the experience. If public accounts would rather not have their content widely shared, they can go into their privacy settings and turn off the "Allow Sharing to Story" option.

This upgrade clearly benefits influencers, brands, and creators. Now that reshares can occur naturally on a large scale, passionate followers can serve as an unofficial distribution network for announcements, campaigns, and regular updates. The typical drawbacks of screenshots, such as compression or cropping, are absent from this broader reach, ensuring that images remain crisp and consistent.
