According to a National Foundation for American Policy research, just three Indian-based businesses were among the top 25 employers with accepted H-1B applications for beginning employment in FY25.
According to a National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) review of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) data, the number of H-1B visa approvals for first employment for the top seven Indian-based enterprises decreased by a staggering 70% in FY25 compared to FY15.
According to the data, only 4,573 H-1B visa petitions were granted for initial employment in FY25 for the top seven Indian-based enterprises. This corresponds to a 37% decrease from FY 2024 and a 70% decrease from FY 2015.
The report stated that "H-1B petitions for initial employment are primarily for new employment, which, for companies, are cases counted against the H-1B annual limit of 65,000, with an exemption of 20,000 for individuals with master's degrees or higher from a US university."
It discovered that only three Indian-based businesses were among the top 25 employers with first employment H-1B visa petitions accepted in FY25.
How do Indian businesses stack up against Google, Amazon, and Meta?
In terms of H-1B visa approvals, the data revealed that Indian enterprises performed far better than those situated in India.
With 4,644 H-1B visa approvals for beginning employment in FY25, Amazon had the highest number.
With 1,555 H-1B visa approvals during the previous fiscal year, Meta Platforms ranked second. Google received 1,050 H-1B visa requests, while Microsoft received 1,394.
These figures indicate that Indian-based businesses are increasingly moving toward providing IT services to the US market with fewer H-1B visas, according to Stuart Anderson, executive director of NFAP.
He was cited by Newsweek as saying, "The numbers show Indian-based companies now deliver IT services to US businesses using relatively few H-1B visas, while the largest US technology companies are hiring many individuals, including recent foreign-born graduate students from US universities to help build AI in the United States after investing several hundred billion dollars to develop artificial intelligence."
Up to 28,277 distinct US firms were authorized to hire at least one new H-1B visa holder in FY25, according to the study. 61% of firms received approval for a single H-1B petition, while 95% of employers received approval for ten or fewer new H-1B visa applications.
According to the report, 72% of new H-1B petitions went to firms with 100 or fewer approvals, and more than half went to employers with 15 or fewer approvals for H-1B petitions for beginning employment.
Why H-1B visa approvals are important now
As US President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown has sparked discussions about highly skilled immigrants, labor shortages, and US competitiveness, H-1B visa approvals are currently in the spotlight.
Trump said that there is not enough American talent to work in important US businesses, despite charging an outrageous $100,000 price for new H-1B visa applications.
In a recent speech at the US-Saudi Investment Forum, Trump stated that he would "welcome" smart immigrants from the US who would "teach" American workers how to create sophisticated items like semiconductors and missiles. He added that he could face some criticism for this from his supporters of immigration limits.
