Today, platform-based workers from companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, and Amazon are on strike nationwide.
Platform workers from Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, and Amazon are taking part in a statewide strike on Wednesday, sponsored by the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT).
This is what the meal delivery agent said.
Food delivery workers are striking for a variety of reasons. Low compensation based on the rate card and the lack of company-provided insurance are listed as important concerns.
According to ANI, a meal delivery agent stated, "When we approach the customer, no matter how much trouble we're in, we smile and say, 'Thank you, sir, please give us a rating.'" If an order is cancelled for whatever reason, the rider is responsible for the penalty... The corporation should take action on this issue. We work 14 hours every day, driving all day and night... We are not compensated based on the amount of work we complete...
Another food delivery agent stated that they do not receive insurance claims, adding, "Initially, the rate card was good, but now they have modified it, generating issues and headaches for all the riders. We don't even receive insurance claims. A rider recently had an accident at Barakhamba, and he didn't receive any claim... Our team leader and senior company officials told him to create a PDF, which they would send to Bangalore... There was no response from there.”
"We all contributed ₹1000-2000 to help the cyclist. Now that guy works even at night, receiving orders at 1 or 2 a.m. The TL never answers the phone. After 20 or 25 calls, the TL responds with an attitude. And if you argue with him even little, he will block your ID. After 14 hours, we barely receive ₹700-800... Today, there is a strike across Delhi," he continued.
A meal delivery person stated, "Currently, deliveries have halted... We heard there is a strike, so we are not working at all... We are grateful that the company gave us so much in the beginning. But now they are reclaiming everything they gave... Other firms grant advancements, but we only receive demotions... We have to work 15-16 hours to make ends meet...”
Gig Workers Union President begs the Centre to interfere.
Shaik Salauddin, President of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU), has requested for the removal of the 10-minute delivery option from all platforms, as well as the return of the old compensation structure, ANI reports.
"Our demand to the platform providers was to reinstate our old compensation structure and remove the 10-minute delivery option from all platforms... We had called for a strike on the 25th and 31st, and on the 25th, 40,000 workers across India came out to support it... We're ready to talk about it... We appeal that the state and federal governments also intervene in this...," Salauddin told ANI.

Salauddin claimed that the initiative had gained support from over 1.5 lakh workers across India, with more expected to join. He also claimed intimidation from aggregator businesses. "Workers are under jeopardy. Bouncers are stationed near warehouses, and IDs are denied by team leaders and area managers. "This kind of pressure will not work," he explained.
The proposal to prohibit 10-minute delivery apps was previously reaffirmed by Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Raghav, who argued that these businesses have exploited gig workers and increased evaluations at their expense, benefiting only the companies.

"In today's world, Swiggy Zomato delivery guys, Blinkit Zepto riders, and Ola Uber drivers are the workforce that has propelled these large companies to unicorn status, with billion-dollar values. If there is one group of people who are persecuted and under great pressure in this entire ecosystem, it is the gig workers," the AAP MP told ANI in an exclusive interview.
According to Chadha, under the 10-minute delivery guarantee, a gig worker who drives carelessly becomes increasingly stressed, risks losing incentives, and suffers customer abuse if the delivery is late, all while receiving no standard labor protections.
