New Delhi criticizes China's 'bizarre' mediation claims during the India-Pakistan conflict: Report

New Delhi has ridiculed China's claim of mediation in the latest India-Pakistan confrontation, calling it 'bizarre'. The Chinese foreign minister's allegations have been regarded with skepticism, since India insists that any cease-fire agreements were purely between its military and Pakistan's.

New Delhi allegedly criticized China's claim of having'mediated' between India and Pakistan last year as 'bizarre'.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that tensions between India and Pakistan were among the concerns "mediated" by Beijing this year.

This claim, however, has been branded as "bizarre" by sources acquainted with the incident, who said China played no involvement in the truce, according to the Hindustan Times on Wednesday.

In May 2025, India and Pakistan engaged in a four-day military confrontation following the Pahalgam terror assault, which killed 26 civilians a month earlier. During Operation Sindoor, India reacted by carrying out precision strikes on militant locations in Pakistan.

What has China said?
Wang Yi, China's foreign minister, made the mediation claim while addressing at the "Symposium on the International Situation and China's Foreign Relations" in Beijing.

"This year, local hostilities and cross-border conflicts erupted more frequently than at any point since the end of World War II. "Geopolitical turmoil continued to spread," he stated.

"Following this Chinese approach to settling hotspot issues, we mediated in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, the tensions between Pakistan and India, the issues between Palestine and Israel, and the recent conflict between Cambodia and Thailand," according to the Chinese minister.

What did New Delhi say?
India has maintained that no third party mediated the truce between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor.

While India has yet to respond officially to Wang Yi's remark, sources in New Delhi informed Hindustan Times that China played no role in resolving tensions between India and Pakistan in May.

"The claim by the Chinese side is bizarre," one of the persons told HT.

According to the HT report, conversations between senior Indian and Pakistani military officials resulted in an agreement to halt military operations on May 10. They noted that New Delhi has consistently stated that third-party engagement in India-Pakistan affairs is not permitted.

"Perhaps the Chinese side is following in the footsteps of the US," a second person told HT, referring to US President Donald Trump's repeated promises of mediating a peace deal between India and Pakistan. India has also rejected Trump's assertion.

"We've already dismissed such assertions. Third parties play no involvement in bilateral issues between India and Pakistan. "Our position has been clarified on several occasions that the India-Pakistan ceasefire was agreed to directly between the two countries' DGMOs," a government source told India Today.
