The Indian Railways announced a fee increase on Sunday, making train travel in the nation—which is a lifeline for many Indians—more expensive.
The notice states that long-distance travelers will be hardest hit by the fee rise, while those traveling less than 215 kilometers will not be affected. Additionally, there has been no increase in the cost of suburban train travel.

According to the press release, Indian Railways is growing its workforce and has greatly expanded its network and operations during the last ten years.
The Railways claims that its pension costs have risen to ₹60,000 crore and its labor costs have risen to ₹1,15,000 crore. In the 2024–2025 fiscal year, the overall cost of operations rose by ₹2,63,000 crore.
In addition to raising fares, the Railways stated that it is concentrating on improving cargo loading in order to offset the rise in labor expenses.
The Railways had previously increased rates in July of this year. In Mail and Express trains, the cost of travel in air-conditioned classes increased by two paise per kilometre, while the tariff in non-air-conditioned classes increased by one paise per km. The fare increase was the first since January 2020.
