An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 strikes Taiwan, causing skyscrapers in Taipei to tremble.

Buildings in
Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, were shaken by an earthquake of magnitude 6.1.

Taiwan's weather service reported that a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred on Wednesday in the southeast coastal county of Taitung, although there were no immediate indications of damage.

At a depth of roughly 11.9 km, the earthquake also caused buildings in Taipei, the nation's capital, to tremble.

The earthquake was recorded at 09:47 UTC (17:47 local time) with a magnitude of 6.0 close to Taitung City.

Strong jolts were observed close to the epicenter, and shaking was felt throughout Taiwan, including Kaohsiung.

A supermarket in the southeastern county reportedly had things knocked off its shelves by the tremor.

According to Reuters, Taiwan's chipmaker TSMC stated that the earthquake did not cause its factories to be evacuated.

According to Taiwan's National Fire Agency, there have not yet been any reports of damage to the island's transportation infrastructure.

Because of its location at the meeting point of two tectonic plates close to the Pacific Ring of Fire, which the US Geological Survey refers to be the most seismically active zone in the world, the island is regularly struck by earthquakes.

The latest significant earthquake to hit Taiwan occurred in April 2024, when a massive 7.4-magnitude earthquake—the biggest in 25 years—killed at least 17 people.

The structures surrounding Hualien sustained significant damage as a result of the earthquake, which also produced landslides.

It was the worst earthquake to strike Taiwan since the deadliest natural disaster in the island's history, a 7.6-magnitude tremor in 1999.
