Following the identification of Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal as the suspect in the Washington, DC shooting, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) made a significant announcement on Wednesday. Just a few blocks from the White House, the 29-year-old opened fire on two National Guard members. He was shot and taken into custody.
President Donald Trump called Afghanistan a "hell hole on earth" in a harsh statement shortly after Lakanwal was identified. He declared, "I can report tonight that the Department of Homeland Security is confident that the suspect in custody is a foreigner who entered our country from Afghanistan based on the best available information."
The suspect was "mass paroled into the United States under Operation Allies Welcome on September 8, 2021, under the Biden Administration," according to a tweet made by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on X.
The USCIS has now declared a policy change. "With immediate effect, all immigration requests pertaining to Afghan nationals will no longer be processed while security and vetting procedures are further reviewed. The CIA stated on X, the platform that was once known as Twitter, "Our primary focus and mission remains the protection and safety of our homeland and of the American people."
The immigration department's action has not yet received a response from Afghanistan.
Trump, who is spending the Thanksgiving weekend in Florida, adding that the attack was ‘monstrous’.
Two National Guard men serving in Washington, DC, were shot at point blank range in a horrific ambush-style attack just a short distance from the White House earlier today on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday. This horrific attack was an act of terror, hatred, and evil. It was a crime against humanity and against our country as a whole. "Those two West Virginian National Guard members and their families are in the hearts of all Americans tonight," he declared.
