Following India's defeat, a BCCI official stated, "We won't take any decision on Gautam Gambhir, will speak to selectors and team."

According to a senior official, the
BCCI would not act against head coach Gautam Gambhir right away following India's recent Test losses.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated that no immediate action will be taken against the head coach or the current playing group, a day after Gautam Gambhir stated that the board would decide his fate following India's second home Test whitewash in a year. The Indian Express was informed by a senior BCCI official that the team is still in a "transition phase" and that the board will not make any decisions regarding Gambhir's future prior to the forthcoming World Cups.

"The BCCI has the last say. In my first press conference after taking over as head coach, I stated that while Indian cricket is significant, I am not. And I remain steadfast in my beliefs as I sit here. On Wednesday, Gambhir stated that he was the same coach that helped India win the Asia Cup, draw the Test series in England, and win the Champions Trophy.

After losing to Australia away and New Zealand at home, India's 2-0 loss to South Africa was the team's third Test series loss under Gambhir in a year. South Africa blanked India 0-2, following their 3-0 home loss to New Zealand last year. Under Gambhir's leadership, the West Indies and Bangladesh have been the only home Test series victories. Despite growing criticism of the team's strategies, selection decisions, and failure to record competitive totals in the two-Test series, BCCI chose consistency over radical changes.

Even though India defeated the West Indies and had a successful series against England earlier this year, the most recent loss has raised concerns about the country's long-term strategy. Tactical decisions, especially the rearranging of Washington Sundar's batting stance and the insistence on spin-heavy pitches that backfired as India failed to score a single century, have been the focus of much of the criticism.

Speaking to the media following the Guwahati loss, Gambhir defended the team while acknowledging that several batting collapses—particularly the drop from 95 for 1 to 120 for 7 in the first innings of the second Test—were crucial turning moments. "Everyone in that dressing room—and it starts with me—is accountable," he declared, accepting full responsibility.\

Officials indicated that the same set of players is likely to continue, with no significant personnel changes planned for the near future, even if the BCCI is anticipated to have talks with selectors and team management after the South Africa series officially ends.
