The choice to choose Shubman Gill as India's 50-over skipper in place of Rohit Sharma was not made lightly, according to Ajit Agarkar. He maintains that the 2027 World Cup was taken into consideration when making the decision.
With the announcement that Shubman Gill will take Rohit Sharma's place as India's One Day International captain, Indian selectors have opted to support youthful talent over experience. When the selection for India's forthcoming white-ball tour of Australia was announced, the decision was made public. It was obviously created with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind, as the selectors had to decide on a skipper who would most likely be included in the squad. Sharma, who is presently 38, may not be able to stay with the team until October–November 2027, when South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will host the ODI World Cup.
Due to his removal from the forthcoming Australia tour, it is also uncertain if Test vice captain Ravindra Jadeja would be included in the World Cup squad.
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selectors' committee, responded to the captaincy query by saying, "Obviously at some point you got to start looking at where the next World Cup is."
According to TOI, Agarkar added that he had told Rohit of the decision before going public, adding that it would be "practically impossible" to have a new captain for each version of the game. He claimed that given how excellent he has been for India, it would have been difficult to choose him even if he had not won the Champions Trophy as captain. However, you must occasionally consider the future and your team's position before deciding what is best for the group, whether it be now or in six months. I guess they are the calls we are supposed to make here.
When selecting a new captain for the ODI format, Agarkar added, "We have to try and give the other guy enough chance to get that confidence of leading another format," because ODI matches are played the least.
He clarified that the declared squad was only for the Australia tour and that being on it does not ensure that a player will be selected for the World Cup.
