In January, Milind Deora left the Congress and joined the Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde faction.
In the Worli constituency of south Mumbai, Aaditya Thackeray, son of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) president Uddhav Thackeray, is leading Milind Deora, the party's Eknath Shinde faction candidate, by a slim margin in one of the state's most significant Sena vs. Sena contests.Mr. Deora, a former Congress MP who defected to the Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, in January, was 1,700 votes behind the younger Thackeray as of 12.45 p.m. on Saturday. Nine of the seventeen rounds of counting have been finished thus far, according to the Election Commission's website.
However, the section is located in the Mumbai (South) Lok Sabha constituency, which for a very long time was a Deora family stronghold. In 1984, 1991, and 1998, Murli Deora won the Mumbai (South) seat three times. Then, in 2004 and 2009, his son, Milind Deora, was elected twice as a member of the Congress. The Shiv Sena began to gain ground there in 2014, and after the party split in 2022, the incumbent Member of Parliament, Arvind Sawant, joined the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena and won again this year.
Mr. Deora, a Rajya Sabha MP, had stated that the conflict between him and Aaditya Thackeray was not personal in the run-up to the Assembly elections. He also claimed that the Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray faction and the Worli MLA had failed to advance the constituency.
"This isn't a personal conflict. Aaditya Thackeray and I have been friends for a while. When he entered politics five years ago, the people of Maharashtra and Mumbai had great hopes for him. However, I believe that people are sick of speed-breaker politics now. The goal is for Maharashtra to advance, as the people desire.
Following the announcement of his candidacy, Aaditya Thackeray asserted that people knew the BJP and the Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, had "looted" Maharashtra. He cited the Lok Sabha elections, where the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi had taken 30 of the state's 48 seats, leaving the ruling Mahayuti with just 17.
"If you look at the Lok Sabha elections as well, the main difference is that people have realized the BJP is a party that makes empty promises. Maharashtra will oppose the BJP and Eknath Shinde, who have embezzled the state.
